Chief Executive and Co-founder
Phil co-founded SmartWater® in 1993 with his brother Mike and is responsible for the strategic thrust of SmartWater and the development of new markets and sales initiatives. Phil created the crime reduction methodology known as The SmartWater Strategy™ (US patent pending), currently in use in London where police at New Scotland Yard are in the process of protecting 440,000 homes throughout the City. As a direct result, burglaries have been reduced in the SmartWater areas by over 25%, producing significant cost savings for police and Government. Formerly a police officer operating within specialist departments, Phil is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a published author.
MIKE CLEARY CSci, CChem, FRSC
Director and Co-Founder
Mike, a royal award-winning and highly qualified chemist, co-founded SmartWater in 1993 with his brother Phil and is the inventor of the technology upon which SmartWater, its products and systems are based. Mike developed the mathematical algorithm enabling the mass production of SmartWater traceable liquids. He also identified many of the key components that are used in SmartWater products and developed the analytical methodology for identifying SmartWater. Mike is also the author of numerous international patents and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Managing Director and Company Solicitor
Before joining SmartWater in 2010, Florian worked as General Counsel for the Müller Dairy Group. Florian is responsible for protecting and licensing the SmartWater Group’s intellectual property rights both in the UK and internationally. Upon qualification as a Solicitor and before moving into industry, Florian worked in the City in the fields of maritime and insurance law.
Ian joined SmartWater in December 2015 after 12 years with Towergate where he was Regional Finance Director responsible for businesses with Gross Written Premium in excess of £100m. Ian has over 25 years’ experience in the Insurance Industry having held a number of senior finance positions with major companies.
ALAN GIVEN QPM
Senior Advisor to the Police Service
Alan worked for 32 years in the police service, retiring as a Deputy Assistant Commissioner in the Metropolitan Police. His career included roles as Deputy Chief Constable of Cambridgeshire Police, the Deputy Director of the Home Office Police Standards Unit, and Chief Executive of the Crime and Drugs Partnership in Nottingham City. Alan now works with SmartWater as its main advisor to the police service and has direct responsibility for operations in London.
Consultant Director of Security Services
Gary completed 30 years police service with the Metropolitan Police and West Mercia Police. He worked in both Uniform and CID roles in every rank from Constable to Superintendent. Gary has an excellent track record in practical policing, having built a reputation for leading from the front, especially regarding burglary investigation and informant handling. Through his varied career he gained expertise and practical experience in public order command, firearms command, as a Senior Investigating Officer and Territorial Policing Commander. As Consultant Director of Security Services, Gary plays a key role in the operational side of SmartWaters Business Model, including advising on crime reduction, both overt and covert operational deployments, police liaison and analytical services.
RICH HARRIS MSc
Director of Technical Services
Educated to post-grad degree level and with a background in manufacturing and stock control, Rich Harris joined SmartWater in 2004 as Production Supervisor. Having steadily risen through the ranks of the company Rich now heads up the Technical Services arm of the company. Rich oversees all departments responsible for the procedural, technical delivery and fulfilment of SmartWater – from R&D and manufacture, through to QC, packaging and dispatch. Rich is also responsible for the IT function of the company and is our IS0:9001 lead auditor.
Dr KEVIN SULLIVAN
Kevin is an internationally recognised and respected forensic scientist, with over 25 years of experience in the research, development, validation and implementation of a broad range of scientific techniques. Kevin has extensive experience in establishing best practice scientific standards at international level and is responsible for the maintenance, continual improvement in quality standards and accreditation of SmartWater products.
